Wicked Type III Square Back
back

Star Date 1991 there a bout’s, No 1 son  Daniel and I are bumping home from the VW Nationals at Park Lea in my lowered 77 Micro Bus [the family car] and Daniel informs me He'd like a Vee Dub to play with, My knee jerk reaction was, " so what would you like, a panel van or a crew cab?" “I want a Type III dad" says Daniel, “Type II?" I said “No dad, a Type III square back!" he replied. mmmmm! Well, it is a Volkswagen, I thought, and I did bring him up to think just that little bit different, don’t follow the leader and all that. So that’s kinda how our love affair began with Dan’s Type III. So we scored a 1969 Square Back for the princely sum of $50.00, not much rust, no motor, no gear box, no interior, but very straight.

As Daniel was a few years off driving age at this stage, time was not such a problem. We stripped the square back  bare, every last nut and bolt, even the wiring harness, made some rotating stands for the body and the floor and spent the next 12 to 18 months preparing everything for paint as money was available. Daniel was determined that he was going to fund this project on his own, as he did. With body sand blasted, derusted, straightened, some tasteful interior modifications, some more under bonnet and engine bay modifications completed, the body was finally primed and set aside till the floor was completed.

With every nut and bolt chromed for the chassis and suspension, the reassembly was completed and looking sweet. Black chassis, Dark German Grey rear sub frame and front beam and suspension components, Turquoise brake lines, for some detail, all NEW moving parts. This was one very nice floor pan, it was going to be a shame to put this one on the road.

The body went back onto the floor pan with ease and the reassembly went a head as planned. First in was the brand new wiring loom, starting with a late model fuse box with blade fuses and a mess of relays. The motor is a brand new 1916cc fuel injected. Daniel modified the factory set up, using a much larger throttle body and an after market computer. A single side plate transmission for some legs. A new interior, consisting of Mazda 929 front seats and the back seat reshaped, some central locking, a sports steering wheel, Berg shifter, caste iron pedal cluster, extra interior lighting, a brand new kustom dash pad, some carpet, now its starting to look and smell  like a brand new car. All new seals replaced the old ones, some of them we made up as we went, like the front door window frames. An extra battery was fitted to my amazement and an alternator that Daniel modified to fit the type III motor, almost unnoticed. As it turned out the square back was to carry round the stereo, I couldn’t believe the amount of stuff that goes into a car stereo these days, I'm getting old!!

Star Date 1995 and it's finally ready for registration. Offcourse it passes the test, the number plates are on and Daniels off into the sunset. A few days after rego, we took it on a drive of about 1200klm's and it didn’t miss a beat.

Well you know what they say about bridges and water, well lots has passed, a mortgage, a wife, a motor bike, a speed boat, some jet ski’s another motor bike, and then of course what normally slows us all down, Jnr, yeah Young Beau was born

Star Date 2007 and Dan still has the Square back. It was tucked away in his garage at home till the speed boat needed to be played with and the III had to be moved, the dust blown off it and a battery fitted just for the hell of it. It’s been quite a few years since it started let alone terrorised the neighbourhood on the street.

So some new plans have come to light regarding this special old III.

I hear it’s a Rexy motor with that 930 gearbox he wondered into the workshop with last Friday afternoon. Yeah Yeah Dad, I’m leaving it standard, IM not all that sure as to what exactly he is leaving standard, that 930 box, or the twin turbo Rex Motor, or maybe the wiper motor on Dashers Bash Beetle he was working on, who really knows, But I’ll keep you posted.

Then of course theres the next generation, Daniels first son Beau, whats the bet he has a passion for Vee Dubs as well. Maybe when Beau gets his license they might be electric, or Turbine motors liked we drempt they would be be during the 60s.

Who knows, what ever it is, Im looking forward to it. Im in such good company.
